the 18th century in which eyewitnesses describe the plaque that was once
in the center of the Chartres labyrinth as depicting Theseus and the Minotaur.

Originally in German, this book quotes Hermann Kern extensively as it
discusses some possible meanings of the labyrinth, as reflected in the
title. It is quite a thoughtful work, but marred by the mistakes it makes

Language, Myths and Rituals, by Patrick Conty
Once this was translated into English, I discovered why I couldn't even
get the gist of it in French. It's dense. This is way out of my league.
I am irked by the fact that he spends much of the book talking about knots,
which to my mind are a separate category from labyrinths. Most of my friends
were puzzled by this book, but one, who has a brilliant mind, absolutely
loves this book and speaks highly of it. It's beyond me.
The Labyrinth in Culture and Society by Jacques Attali
The French seem to have no inclination to distinguish between labyrinths
and mazes. Rumor has it that Attali has written dozens of books, most
of them by ghost writers. His theme is that life is too simple, and that
it should be more complicated. He uses the Internet as an example of a
labyrinth. Unless you are trying to collect every book on labyrniths (like
me), forget this one.
